served as a preliminary Development Activity Proposal (DAP) for
Title II funding from the United States Agency for International

Food Security Appraisal/Needs Assessment. The DAP proposal
outlined four food-aid projects to be implemented during
FY1997-2001: 1) Farmer-to-Farmer Exchange Project, 2) Rural
Infrastructure Enhancement Project through Food-for-Work, 3)
Emergency Provisioning Project for chronically food insecure
areas and displaced peoples, and 4) Early Warning Information

Rapid Food Security Appraisal for
CARE-Angola |

Worked as group team leader on a Rapid Food
Security Appraisal of Southwestern Angola. Household interviews
were conducted in 18 communities in the departments of Bie and
Kuando Kubango, Angola. CARE was the first non-governmental team
to be allowed into the previously Unita held territory. Research
focused on impact of conflict on livelihoods, impact of conflict
on women, and targeting criteria for food-insecure groups for
future programming efforts.

Assisted CARE-Honduras' Food Security
Unit in designing and writing a five-year Development Project
Proposal (DPP) for funding from the United States Agency for
International Development (USAID). Provided technical support on
CARE-Honduras' DPP, compiling and analyzing detailed
information and data on three food-aid projects: 1)
Community-Based Rural Health Centers, 2) Rural Infrastructure
through Food-for-Work, and 3) Community-Based Agroforestry
Demonstration Plots. Attended negotiations with USAID as a
CARE-Honduras representative. The proposal followed USAID's
reengineered Title II guidelines, with particular emphasis placed
on designing an evaluation framework that measured results on an
ongoing basis. Funded: US,670,347.00

and wrote a poverty profile of Honduras. The profile outlined
regions of food insecurity and vulnerability in Honduras. The

Worked as sub-group team leader on a Rapid
Food Security Appraisal of Western Honduras. Household interviews
were conducted in 18 communities in the three poorest departments
(counties) of Honduras. Data gathered is being used for targeting
food-insecure groups for future food aid programming.

Team leader of a project designed to
evaluate the effectiveness of a five-year development project
conducted by Fundación Agropecuario (FUNDAGRO) and funded
by USAID. With a team of 15 enumerators, I organized three
interview waves that were carried out over a 12-month period.
During each interview wave, 120 farm families were interviewed
concerning their participation in the coffee improvement
program

Dissertation Research |

Dissertation research in the coastal
province of Manabi, Ecuador investigating the impact of the shift
from subsistence cropping to cash cropping (coffee production) on
the growth and development trajectory of children below the age
of five, as well as the economic consequences at the household
level. Second, peasant farm household migration to squatter
settlements in Guayaquil and the impact of migration on household
livelihood systems were also systematically investigated

Ethnographic Fieldwork in Colonia

Conducted interviews with women members of
community self-help action groups who were trying to obtain basic
services (running water and electricity) for their neighborhood.
The research objective was to investigate the effectiveness of
women's community organizing, and to understand how the
empowerment of women at the community level did or did not
translate into empowerment at the household level.
